Circle of Elephants Midwifery Care

When a female elephant gives birth she is surrounded by a group of female elephants who form a protective circle around her. They face outwards, guarding her and leaving her to birth protected and yet unobserved…sometimes she is joined by one elderly female elephant, ‘the midwife’ elephant, who sits with her as she births her calf, protected and guarded by her circle of elephants.

Caitlyn Collins and Ruth Ehrhardt

Ruth Ehrhardt (True Midwifery) and Caitlyn Collins (Into Essence) are Certified Professional Midwives (North American Registry of Midwives) and registered as Traditional Midwives in South Africa with the Traditional Doctor’s Union.

Circle of Elephants Midwifery Care practice attends births at home in the Cape Town Southern Peninsula, Southern Suburbs, Cape Flats and CBD area. The fee structure for our practice is applicable to these areas.

We will endeavour to attend births further afield on a case by case but with added costs incurred by the client.

The attending midwives, students and client will carry out The Midwifery Model of Carefor pregnancy, birth and postpartum jointly in order to ensure optimum safety for MotherBaby.

The Midwives Model of Care includes:

  • Monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle
  • Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support
  • Minimizing technological interventions
  • Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention

The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.

Alongside the midwifery model of care, we work with the Science and physiology of birth by providing for the basic needs of a woman in pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

We endeavour to follow current, evidence-based maternity care and follow the WHO (World Health Organisation) & South African public health guidelines and to encourage informed choice in all our clients.
