What is True Midwifery?

old woman's hands

“You are a midwife, assisting at someone else’s birth.

Do good without show or fuss.

Facilitate what is happening rather than what you think ought to be happening.

If you must take the lead, lead so that the mother is helped, yet still free and in charge.

When the baby is born, the mother will rightly say, “We did it ourselves!”

I am also the author of The Basic Needs of A Woman in Labour

My next teaching trip to Europe takes me to the land of my cousins, Greece!

I will be collaborating with doulas Nicola Mahdiyyah Goodall and Kerys Williams on this new Sunshine House initiative, which is aimed at bringing together experienced doulas, midwives and birthkeepers to share their knowledge and wisdom on birth in sacred circle. This is the first of a series of workshops to come over the next years. The course is aimed at doulas, midwives, birthkeepers and those interested in pursuing this field of work. During this 3 day workshop, we will look at prenatal, birth and postpartum stages of the birthing process and share information on movement, remedies, techniques and offer a certification from the Helping Babies Breathe organisation, for cases when neonatal support is needed.
